It is a historic town with many attractions and monuments, with the huge medieval century fortress, Castillo de Santa Barbara, overlooking Alicante from the north and the fourteenth century Gothic church, St Mary’s, which is built on the site of a Moorish mosque. With its excellent weather, Alicante is an golfer’s dream with three wonderful golf courses surrounding the city (one recently designed and opened by Severiano Ballesteros), and regular PGA tours and international tournaments held here regularly.
